Al Green says he's surprised that audiences in Spain sing along to his songs, women battle to catch roses he throws from the stage and police officers let him off the hook when he forgets his driver's license.

Is it possible he doesn't know what the fuss is all about?
As one of soul music's most celebrated vocalists, Green has recorded eight Top 10 singles and won nine Grammy Awards.

"I don't play that high-class, superstar trip thing," he says during a phone interview. "I go to Wal-Mart. I go get what I want. If somebody wants me to sign something, I say, 'Yep.' Or they can take a picture. I don't care about that. Make life easy for yourself."

The 61-year-old will perform Saturday night at Indy Jazz Fest, and he plans to preach Sunday morning at his Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis, Tenn.
His concerts are a mixture of spiritual and secular. When Green -- an ordained minister since the 1970s -- speaks about the mission of his ministry, he uses titles of many non-gospel hits to explain it.

"I know what I have to do is hard," he says. "God told me it's hard. But I have to still do it -- carry that message of 'Love and Happiness,' 'Let's Stay Together,' 'I'm Still in Love With You' and 'Call Me (Come Back Home).' We're better together than we are apart."

A schedule of more than 30 concerts this summer and two three-hour services most Sundays at Full Gospel doesn't faze Green. "It's kind of what I've done all the time," he says. "If I didn't do it, I would be wondering what's wrong."

But the native of Forest City, Ark., was a mainstream star before he founded the Full Gospel congregation. Green's life-changing moment happened in 1974, when a distraught girlfriend poured hot cereal on the singer as he exited the shower. Green suffered serious burns, and 29-year-old Mary Woodson killed herself at the scene.

After a series of gospel albums, Green returned to a pop format for 2003's "I Can't Stop" and 2005's "Everything's OK" with Willie Mitchell, producer and arranger of Green's biggest hits.

Up next is a studio album made with the hip-hop group the Roots, with production by drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson.

"It has this aura," Green says of the album. "Al's in there, he's going to be Al, but the music sounds so different."

It's a breath of fresh air."

A regular at the Knickerbocker Saloon, Kokomo's Mike Milligan will soon be rubbing elbows with one of his heroes.

Milligan and his band Steam Shovel will perform at the 2007 Indy Jazz Fest in downtown Indianapolis. He'll be alongside such acclaimed musicians as Bela Fleck, Chick Corea, James Hunter, Spyro Gyra, Regina Carter and Milligan's favorite, the one and only Al Green.

"If I get to meet Al Green," Milligan mused, "I'll be in good shape."

With another eclectic lineup, Indy Jazz Fest will fill Military Park with the sounds of not just jazz but blues, soul, funk and swing music. Indy Jazz Fest will begin at 6:30 tonight and runs through 9 p.m. Sunday.

Here's a concert review from The Indianapolis Star

Green wins hearts with soul
By David Lindquist
June 17, 2007

"The two sides of the Rev. Al Green brought a unified message to Indy Jazz Fest on Saturday night.

Whether singing gospel or mainstream R&B, Green's bullet points of peace, love and happiness remained front and center.

Early on, the Memphis, Tenn.-based pastor rotated from the spiritual-minded "He's Coming Back" to "Amazing Grace" to a Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers cover to his own secular smash "Let's Stay Together."

In terms of sentiment, the four-song journey was a short one.

Green last played Indy Jazz Fest on a rainy night in 2000. This year's conditions are absolutely dry, but the soul icon hasn't altered his routine of passing out countless roses to female audience members.

Roughly 40 years into his career, Green roams free above an accomplished show band. While he doesn't hesitate to sacrifice vocal perfection for having a good time, his falsetto remains true.

And when dialing in the gritty emotion heard during Saturday's rendition of "Let's Get Married," he reinforced his reputation for igniting romance."

HAVE MERCY!!!!  Al's performance was so very beautiful in every way!  He absolutely is an angel sent right down from heaven.  It was an awesome show and better than some I've seen on tape.  The amount of energy he possesses is just unbelievable.  And the boundless love he shows for his audience and for the world is truly inspiring.  He gave all credit to God and described himself as only an unimportant "little pea".  Mr. Green, there are those of us who would beg to disagree with that, but we sure do admire and respect where you're coming from.  You the man!  From I Can't Stop, to Love and Happiness, he never missed a beat.  He sang my favorite, which was easily one of the best in the concert, Here I Am (Come and Take Me), and I was in total rapture for sure.  His daughter seemed so proud of him (lucky gal) and displayed much the same type of outgoing personality as her Dad.  It was hot, hot, hot, about 90 out, and I loved every minute of it.  The show started at about 9:40 and lasted til 11:00. We had the best seats that could be bought, a small section with white picket fence around it with GREEN seats, front and center (even though there was a press type of area in front of us that got all the roses).  It really didn't matter because I was on my feet the entire time.  Al was attentive to every section of his audience, even those "over by that big tree".  His happiness and his closeness to people absolutely overwhelmed that pretty park.  It was so perfect, and I've got a buzz going that you would not believe.  Will write more later.

From The Indianapolis Star, an article and photo slideshow about the 3-day Indy Jazz Fest:

Jazz Fest reports jump in attendance from '06
By David Lindquist
June 18, 2007

"The largest portion of Indy Jazz Fest's composite crowd showed up on Saturday, when soul singer Al Green headlined an eight-act bill.

"I felt the energy building in the park Saturday afternoon," Small said. "People just kept coming in, even after Al Green started."

Don't miss the Saturday slideshow which includes sound clips of audience members talking about Al Green, and Al singing "Everything's Gonna Be Alright."

WAIT A MINUTE!  As the Rev. sang the delightful Let's Get Married, more and more people gathered on the outside perimeter of Military Park last Saturday evening.  Many of them were in town from Europe to attend the Formula One race on Sunday morning.  Al told the crowd "May the best man win".  Although the stage was up rather high from the audience, the Rev. got down on his knees momentarily to reach a few fingertips in the crowd below.  I met two gals who had driven in from Ohio to see the show.  One said she had followed Al's career since 1969.  In my self appointed role as good will ambassador for the forum for the evening, I encouraged them to check out the forum, and told them it was a lot of fun. You never saw two bigger smiles in your life.  The concert was FANtastic and you'd better believe I am still on cloud nine.  The love flowed up, down and all around!  Rev., what a wonderful night we all shared together.  Thank you!  Be seeing you in Chicago at House Of Blues.  L-O-V-E (Love)!!
