The flat, rich soil of the Arkansas Delta extends its easternmost boundary to the mighty Mississippi river. It's a harsh land best known for cotton fields and poverty and jukes frequented by itinerate bluesmen like Sonny Boy Williamson and Robert Jr. Lockwood. Just the other side of the Mississippi is Memphis, the capital of the deltalands, which has long tugged hard on area dreamers despairing for solid wages, better times, and, on occasion, fame.
Driving through the delta now is like driving through a broken place where landscapes have cracked and too much has been allowed to seep away.
