Fifteen years. That's how many years Al turned away from the soul music that had made him a pop legend. That's how many years he received accolades for applying his inimitable, idiosyncratic style to a full range of recorded gospel. During these years he had one singular mission: to do God's biding through ministry and song. Honor for himself was the farthest thing from Al's mind. Ironically, it is during this fruitful period (1980 - 1993) that Al was most richly rewarded. He received no less than eight Grammys from the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences, whose voting members acknowledged Al as practically owning the "Best Soul Gospel" categoriesHis first all-gospel recording followed quickly on the heels of his 1979 decision. The Lord Will Make a Way, recorded in his American Music studio in 1980, was an instant gospel classic that alternated the "Hi-ish" sound of the title track with the uptempo joy of "Saved," the sultry croon of "Too Close" and a number of other equally fine cuts.
